Confirmed Measles Case in Kane County
Kane County Health Department is investigating a confirmed case of measles in a Kane County resident. The individual was unvaccinated against measles and is no longer infectious as of August 25, 2026.
KCHD is working with healthcare providers, schools, community partners and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) to identify and notify people who may have been exposed and provide education about measles and the importance of vaccination.

Potential Exposure
KCHD has identified the following locations and dates where individuals may have been exposed to measles:
- Kaneland High School, 47W326 Keslinger Road, Maple Park, IL 60151 on August 18, 2026: Exposure may have occurred throughout the school day.
- Next Generation Pediatric Clinic, 107 S. McLean Blvd., Suite B, South Elgin, IL 60177 on August 21, 2026: Exposure may have occurred between 12:30 and 4 p.m.
Additional exposure information may be released as the investigation continues and information is confirmed.
What You Should Do If You May Have Been Exposed
If you were at one of the identified locations during the potential exposure period:
- Determine whether you are protected against measles. Evidence of immunity may include documentation of the recommended doses of MMR vaccine, laboratory evidence of immunity, or laboratory confirmation of previous measles infection. If you were born before 1957, you may also have evidence of immunity based on your birth year, although your healthcare provider may recommend vaccination depending on your circumstances.
- If you are unprotected and were potentially exposed, stay home and quarantine for 21 days from the date of potential exposure unless you can provide evidence of immunity. KCHD or another public health authority may provide specific quarantine instructions based on your circumstances.
- If you cannot locate your vaccination records, contact your healthcare provider, school, previous healthcare providers, or IDPH's vaccination records portal, Vax Verify. Your provider can discuss whether vaccination or blood testing is appropriate.
- Contact your healthcare provider if you are unsure whether you are protected against measles.
- Monitor for symptoms for 21 days after your potential exposure.
- If you develop symptoms and believe you may have been exposed to measles, call your healthcare provider before going to a medical office, urgent care or emergency department. This allows the healthcare facility to make appropriate arrangements to protect other patients and healthcare workers.
Being exposed to measles does not mean that you have measles. People who have been exposed may be asked to monitor for symptoms, provide documentation of immunity, or quarantine depending on their individual circumstances. KCHD will provide additional guidance to people who are identified as potentially exposed.
What Are the Symptoms of Measles?
Measles is a highly contagious respiratory illness. Symptoms may include:
- Fever
- Cough
- Runny nose
- Red or watery eyes
- Rash
Symptoms generally develop 7–21 days after exposure.
If you develop symptoms and think you may have been exposed to measles, call your healthcare provider before going to a medical office, urgent care or emergency department. Do not arrive at a healthcare facility without calling first.
How to Protect Yourself from Measles
The best way to prevent measles is vaccination. The measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine is highly effective at preventing measles, and two doses are approximately 97% effective.

KCHD Offers Free MMR Vaccine Through September 4, 2026
In response to a recent confirmed measles case in Kane County, the Kane County Health Department is offering a limited-time opportunity for eligible individuals to receive a free measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine.
You may be eligible for a free MMR vaccine if you:
- Were born in or after 1957
- Are over 18 months of age
- Have not received any MMR vaccine
- Have received only one dose of MMR (two doses are currently recommended for full protection)
- Do not have documentation of measles vaccination or immunity
- Are otherwise not adequately protected against measles
Important: This vaccination opportunity is not for individuals currently under quarantine due to potential measles exposure. If you are quarantining, follow KCHD instructions and contact us with questions.
